Europe River trip - 2018: Rhine Gorge and Rudesheim

Oct. 17
Due to low water levels we had to leave the ship and go by coach to a smaller tourist boat to see the Rhine gorge.  We rode by coach to Boppard and sailed on the smaller ship 'Lorely Star' to see the middle Rhine and Lorely.  This was to be the highlight of our trip cruising through the scenic Rhine Gorge.  So we got on a the small ship with lots of Chinese and saw the sights.

There were lots of vistas of castles perched above vine covered slopes.  At one point we could see 3 castles from one point on the river.

We also traveled to Lorelei Rock where sailors are said to have been lured into treacherous rocks by enchanted temptresses.

Lorelei Rock,  this is where even the smaller ship turned around.

Along the banks of the Rhine were many camping/RV parks.

In the afternoon we arrived at Rudesheim, one of Germany's most popular towns.  We had lunch at a beer garden off a very narrow street.  We even had entertainment while we ate.

The Drosselgasse - very narrow street, 10 feet wide in some places.

After lunch we walked to the Siegfried's Mechanical Musical Instrument Museum and took a tour of the many rooms with mechanical music contraptions.

We had time to walk around town.  Most of the town is shut off from anything but pedestrian traffic and the tourist train.

Above the town, the 35 foot tall symbolic figure of Germania sits on a hill. It was completed in 1883 to commemorate Germany's unification in 1871.

On the way back to the ship we had to take a ferry across th Rhine.  This picture is off our ferry taken of another ferry carrying cars across.
